CATERPILLARS

Caterpillars

2 - 3 years, staff ratio 1:4

We offer a fun-filled and exciting day with variety and challenge. Speaking and listening to each other as well as to staff promotes self-esteem and respect for others.

Sharing books and enjoying one to one stories as well as small group stories and poems encourages a love of books and a respect for them too. An assessment folder is kept on each child in which we keep records of achievements, goals that we are working towards, examples of work, observations and photographs.

Songs and action rhymes are great fun and promote rope learning and repetition which builds confidence. Turn taking and sharing are encouraged through small group games, acting out rhymes and discussions. Expressive arts and design are promoted through dressing up, using 2 and 3D materials for model making and creating art work, moving to music and role play. Squeezing and moulding clay and dough helps the muscles in the hands develop .

Mark making using a variety of mediums inc chalks, paints, charcoal, water and mud are the first steps towards writing. Having their own drawers where children can place their own possessions is important at this age as they start to become independent. Saying please and thank you are promoted as children begin to understand that we all have feelings and that we need to respect each other. Having FUN, lots of laughter and enjoyment within their environment is key to learning.
